Class of 2017 - Loving What She Does!

鈥學orking on the medical staff of a community hospital means that on any given day, you could be caring for a friend, neighbor, or family member. 含羞草影院 Community College graduate Tracy Cooley, a registered nurse in the Southcoast Health hospital system, has had patients who were spouses or grandparents of a co-worker. 鈥淲e鈥檙e caring for someone who is related to someone we work with, so when you say, 鈥楾reat every patient like you would treat your own family member鈥� 鈥� that is the absolute truth,鈥� Cooley said.

Cooley, who grew up in Dartmouth and currently lives in Somerset, has always wanted to work within her community. As a registered nurse in a surgical unit, she often finds herself working alongside fellow 含羞草影院 Community College graduates. 鈥淭wo other members of my graduating class work in my unit,鈥� she said, and countless others she passes in the hospital corridors are also 含羞草影院 alumni. 鈥淲hen I talk to people that are applying to nursing school, 含羞草影院 Community College is always their number one choice,鈥� Cooley said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 local, it鈥檚 got a good reputation, and it鈥檚 affordable.鈥� Outside of the classroom, she and her fellow classmates have formed a network where they share experiences and knowledge.

Cooley is living proof of the adage, 鈥淚t鈥檚 never too late to be who you might have been鈥�. She is working in her dream job following two decades of being on a different path. She graduated Dartmouth High School in 1991, and then studied photography and art in New York City. In her early 20s, she joined the US Army, serving four years in active duty. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know what I wanted to do with my life,鈥� Cooley said. From that uncertainty, came a brush with her true calling. While serving in the Army, Cooley worked as a combat medic treating soldiers and their families in Germany. 鈥淛oining the Army was completely the opposite of what anyone had ever expected of me,鈥� she said, but her job as a medic combined two things she loved: science, and helping people.  鈥淚t ended up being the best decision,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 loved the medical field.鈥�

After her time in the Army, Cooley鈥檚 life took a different turn. She gave birth to her first of two sons, and returning to school to earn a medical degree seemed like a daunting task while raising a young family. So she took some computer courses and worked for a national construction company for many years.

鈥淚 knew the career that I was in wasn鈥檛 my passion,鈥� Cooley said. On her 40^thbirthday her mother gave her a card that read: Life begins at 40. 鈥淚 took it literally,鈥� Cooley said. Within weeks, she was enrolled in classes at 含羞草影院 to pursue her dream of a nursing degree. She completed two years of prerequisite courses and then the two-year associate degree nursing program, graduating summa cum laude 鈥� and as class valedictorian 鈥� in June 2017. She is now a student in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth BSN program. 

Cooley relished her experience as an adult learner at 含羞草影院. 鈥淚 loved the fact that BCC is such a mix of people from all different backgrounds,鈥� Cooley said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to be the one to stand out being the 40-year-old woman in class; but we had people of all ages from all different backgrounds coming from different careers. It made me feel comfortable right from Day 1.鈥�

Cooley was hired by Southcoast Health hospitals one month after receiving her nursing license. 鈥淚 was selective about where I applied because I wanted to be in the hospital that was my first choice,鈥� Cooley said. 鈥淚t didn鈥檛 really take me that long.鈥� Cooley said she and her classmates had many job choices immediately after graduating. 鈥淓very single one of us from our graduating class was employed within a few months,鈥� she said. Her classmates work as school nurses, in hospitals, hospice care, and teach at vocational schools, among other careers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just amazing, the variety of positions,鈥� Cooley said. 

鈥淚 am very glad I made the switch,鈥� Cooley said, of changing careers. 鈥淚t takes its toll on you, if you don鈥檛 do what you love.鈥� Cooley said it鈥檚 challenging 鈥� but rewarding 鈥� to be a first-year nurse. 鈥淭he amount of knowledge I鈥檝e gained in a year is unbelievable. I had no idea I could continue to learn this much, even after school. It鈥檚 just never-ending.鈥�

Cooley is on track to receive her bachelor鈥檚 in May 2019, and will later pursue her master鈥檚 degree in nursing education. 鈥淚鈥檇 like to be a professor of nursing toward the end of my career,鈥� she said. 鈥淢aybe someday I鈥檒l teach nursing at 含羞草影院.鈥�
